Company F unmanned reach truck in operation

Project background

Company F uses unmanned reach trucks to move pallets and cable reels in a smart factory. Pallet and reel position and angle are not fixed. The vehicles must detect low obstacles in a dynamic environment and handle loads at a maximum operating height of 2.2 m.

Solution components

Pallet and reel recognition

The PalletPro recognition system captures depth data from pallets and cable reels and outputs position and pose. Project records state that the reach truck adjusts its pose at about 200 mm from a pallet and that one vehicle can complete more than 500 docking, handling, and stacking tasks per day.

3D visual obstacle avoidance

The reach truck and under-ride AGV use 3D visual obstacle avoidance to detect low and overhanging obstacles and provide perception for driving in a dynamic warehouse.

Top-view navigation

The V Series top-view navigation system localizes by recognizing natural features on ceilings and walls. Project records state that each vehicle travels nearly 10 km per day and that 18 reach trucks accumulated 50,000 km in total.

Results

Together, the three visual capabilities provide data for pallet docking, obstacle avoidance, localization, and navigation, helping the vehicles maintain material-handling operations in a complex factory logistics environment.
